The Weeknd Actually Does Bring Out Lauryn Hill for ‘In the Night’ on ‘Fallon’

Better late than never

Five nights ago, Lauryn Hill was an expected surprise guest at the 58th Grammys, after pics had gotten out of her rehearsing with the Weeknd for his performance of “In the Night.” Fans were disappointed when Abel Tesfaye ended up performing his Beauty Behind the Madness hit medley solo, leading to Hill releasing a statement saying the duet idea was last-minute and never confirmed by her. But that did unsurprisingly little to quell fan disappointment.

So now, Ms. Lauryn Hill has made good on the promise she never really made in the first place, by joining Tesfaye as a surprise — really, this time — guest for his performance on Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Indeed, the two sang the same pitched-down version of “In the Night” that Abel did at the Grammys; hardly a showstopper, but always good to hear Hill’s voice in just about any context, considering how rare a treat it is these days. Watch their performance here.
