RJD2 Further Clarifies the Lucid Ambience of Tycho’s ‘Apogee’

Tycho‘s last exercise in flexible ambient electronica, 2014’s Awake, has kept him going in the year following with a steady stream of remixes from the likes of New York beat-melter Com Truise and Vampire Weekend’s BAIO. Both of these and more — including reworks from bubbly soundscapers Bibio and Ghostly International labelmates Beacon — will arrive as part of an Awake remix package, due January 15 digitally (May 20 on vinyl). Pre-order the collection via Tycho’s ISO50 store.

Philadelphia’s RJD2, the once-and-future master of jazzy trip-hop slowdowns indebted to Moby’s soulful sampling, takes a subtle turn behind the boards for Awake album sleeper “Apogee.” He unspools the original’s gentle guitar lines over brushed drums with a sprawl not unlike Explosions in the Sky, and with prickly synthesizer gulps, smoothly melds the brassy strut of his Deadringer heyday with the ambitious tones of Tycho’s latest expanded-band setup.
