While everyone was making a big fuss out of Ryan Adams’s 1989 cover album last year, New York City production duo The Knocks cooked up a smoothly synthed-out track about their own #SquadGoals with “I Wish (My Taylor Swift).” Now Penguin Prison has offered up a remix of the track, eschewing the original’s vaguely tropical ache for a more thumping, groovy take that builds and builds without ever being overbearing. The electro-pop wiz even throws in some infectious beatboxing to go alongside original vocalist Matthew Koma’s lovelorn pining.
“I’ve been friends with Ben and JPatt for a while so it was nice to finally make a remix for one of their songs,” Penguin Prison told SPIN. “I recorded some of the bass part with my mouth beatbox style and that seems to be their favorite part of the remix. Mine too!”
“Penguin has been one of our favorite remixers for years,” the Knocks said in a statement. “Some of his remixes have been staples in our DJ sets for a long time. We were honored and excited when we found out he was gonna do this and he didn’t disappoint.”
