Eryn Allen Kane Takes Flight on ‘Aviary: Act I’

Chicago-based singer Eryn Allen Kane has always worked in quiet back-corners of the music world. After working with Prince for his protest song, “Baltimore” and collaborating with Chance the Rapper and is band, The Social Experiment, for their latest record, SurfKane is ready to ascend into the spotlight on her debut EP Aviary.

Exhibiting great control and range of her voice, Kane delivers with effortless fluidity. Her colossal harmonies engulf listeners in solidarity on “Have Mercy,” feel weightless and unburdened, even in the face of loss. Taking on a warmness redolent of several generations of singer-songwriters, she fantasizes on her “Piano Song,” evoking cloudy, crystalline imagery, and crescendoing over blaring trumpets into beautiful chaos. It is, on the whole, a light breeze after a tumultuous storm — four tracks of deserved peace in dark times.

You can stream stream Act I of her debut EP Aviary here, and it’s also available for download on iTunes.

She’ll play a release show on February 19 at City Winery in Chicago. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
