Dan Deacon, Giraffage, Peking Duk, and More Tell Their ‘What Happens In Vegas’ Stories

Last weekend, Las Vegas had the pleasure of hosting bands from all over the world for the Life is Beautiful festival. Not only did this lead to a grip of awesome performances, but it also gave said bands the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of Sin City glory. Whether it be Dan Deacon waxing nostalgic about that one time he hit big on a hand of black jack, or Giraffage telling us all about his love for casino buffet crabs legs, the ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ stories were readily available…when we could be trusted with them, that is. Listen to some of the tales of debauchery from bands playing SPIN‘s stage at the #ToyotaMusic Den below.

Giraffage

Do you have a ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ story?

I don’t know if I have one yet because this is only my second day in Vegas so far. I’ve never done Vegas as a post-21-year-old. I got one of those crazy yardstick drink things and now I feel really sick. I probably don’t want to tell anyone I got one of those.

Do you have a bucketlist or one thing you really want to do while you’re here?

I really wanna eat buffets. I’ve already eaten two buffets in the one day I was here.

Which buffets?

I had Caeser’s Palace and the Wynn.

So far, which is better?

Caeser’s Palace by far. That place was the shit. That was like the best buffet I’ve ever had in my life.

Are you in it for the shrimp cocktail? What’s your power move at the buffet?

I go straight for the crab legs. I got like five plates of crab legs. It was tight.

Dan Deacon

Do you have a Vegas bucket list for now? Is there something you love doing in Vegas or that you really want to do?

I love playing one hand of blackjack and putting down like, not a lot of money but the kind of amount that I would be bummed to lose, but I built it up in my head that I’m okay with losing it – it’s almost more fun. I’m not in Vegas very often and the last time I did that was with Girl Talk after playing the Hard Rock cafe. We pretty drunkenly went down on a blackjack table. I put down like 200 bucks and I won $1000. I doubled down – I don’t even know how to do that. He [the dealer] was like, “do you want to split them?” and I was like, “yeah, split ‘em!” and I kept riding it out and then I won. And after playing that one hand, I left. It was great. My bucket list is to win $1,000 again.

Saint Motel

We’re asking all the bands if they’ve had a ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ moment.

The answer is Yes. We can’t tell you that.

It’s about trusting me.

Well, we can go this far: it was one of our first shows ever in Vegas – we’ll take you up to where we can’t go anymore – we got to our hotel, we all put on white bathrobes, made ourselves a fine martini, took a stroll down to boulevard, met some nice people – in the bathrobes, barefoot – went to Caeser’s Palace, watched the light show, and at that point everything kicked in and we can’t tell you any more.

I think I know. One more follow up question: is there anything that you haven’t done in Vegas? What’s on your bucket list?

We’ve never actually killed anyone, but we’re not sure if anyone we’ve been around has died at this point.

So, you may have indirectly killed someone?

Yeah… yeah. Saint Motel is murder. That’s a lie.

What’s on your Vegas bucket list.

I’m trying to paraglide. I’m trying to see all of the skylines all around the world while popping bottles of champagne and listening to Rick Ross. That’s the goal eventually.

That’s amazing. Have you put any plans in motion?

Yeah, of course. We called Rick and we’ve already ordered the champagne. It’s just a matter of time at this point.

Your personal friend, Rick?

I call him by his first name.

Big Data

What is your ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ experience?

We don’t have a ton of crazy Vegas stories. I have one that involves a person that used to be on our team who got really drunk and his recollection of what happened the night before was very different from stories that we gathered from the hotel.

His version of the story was that he won a lot of money at a table at a casino and then he had some beautiful women and he took them home with him. And then someone from the hotel had to tell us the next day like, that guy came to the bar and fell off a stool and kind of caused a ruckus.

Parade of Lights

Is there anything on your Vegas bucket list?

Putting it on black is cool. I don’t gamble, really, but if I do I put it on roulette. It’s always tempting to put everything you have in.

Do you have a lucky number?

No, I don’t. I should.

So, how do you pick?

Well, that’s the thing – I either put it on red or black. I don’t gamble so I don’t do the individual bets.

2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 32, and then I split my zeros. I win all the time. And then it’s 33 to 1, so I’ll deal like fives and come out with 300 bucks.

Peking Duk

Have you ever had a ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ story?

We can’t say anything at all.

No, you can!

I’m a dirty man. I can’t say these things in an interview – it would be too rude. I’m a sick fuck. It would take you to a dark place that no one wants to go.

People have gone a little dark. I had one band tell me that they may have murdered someone.

That’s pretty fucked. I’ve never taken it that far. I’ve got respect for human life.

Well, that’s good. If you could do anything in Vegas, what would it be?

One thing that we wanted to do is catch a helicopter to the Grand Canyon. We did that last time we were here. So, now we need to be inspired and you need to tell us what good things there are to do.

You guys have to make your own destiny.

We have to choose our own fate. We have to figure out what we’re going to do.
