D.R.A.M. Claims Drake ‘Jacked’ ‘Cha Cha’ for ‘Hotline Bling’

Update: The FADER has shared a previously unpublished portion of their cover story with Drake, where he comments on the connection between “Hotline Bling” and D.R.A.M.’s “Cha Cha.” Check it out below:

“You know, like in Jamaica, you’ll have a riddim and it’s like, everyone has to do a song on that,” Drake said. “Imagine that in rap, or imagine that in R&B. Imagine if we got one beat and every single person — me, this guy, this guy, all these guys — had to do a song on that one beat. So sometimes I’ll pick a beat that’s a bit, like, sunnier, I guess is the word you used, than usual, and I just try my hand at it. And that’s kind of what ‘Hotline Bling’ was. And I loved it. It’s cool. I’ve been excited by that sort of creative process.”

While Drake was dropping his “Hotline Bling” video last night, D.R.A.M. — who was performing in Toronto for Chance the Rapper’s “Family Matters” tour — dropped a batch of feelings after the show, involving the alleged similarities between “Cha Cha” and Drake’s very coverable song. “I feel like I got jacked for my record,” tweeted D.R.A.M., who let out a string of other thoughts throughout the night. Erykah Badu, who remixed “Hotline Bling,” even replied to D.R.A.M., saying, “we loved Cha Cha first. Very unique and raw.”
