Metric Voyage Through ‘Tron’-Like History of Boomboxes in ‘Too Bad, So Sad’

Metric might be gunning for the second most famous “Woo hoo!” in the alternative music canon after Blur’s “Song 2” with the new single off their forthcoming album, Pagans in Vegas (due September 18 via MMI/Crystal Math Music). Both sonically and aesthetically, “Too Bad So Sad” follows kaleidoscopic first listen “The Shade” and the 13-track effort’s slightly more subdued second single, “Cascades.” But this visual mind trip is the most brazen of the three: opening The Downward Spiral-era synths give way to Emily Haines singing the title in a voice dripping with sarcasm, while lean, mean guitar riffs slither underneath.
