Chance the Rapper Says Kanye West Was Supposed to Narrate ‘Surf’

Update: Chance the Rapper has announced a North American tour. The Family Matters Tour MMXV will kick off in Austin, Texas, on October 11, and make its way across the country (with two stops in Canada) before wrapping up in Los Angeles on November 24. Check out the full list of dates and buy tickets here.

Chance the Rapper and Kanye West have each revealed recently that they may have collaborations in the works, but in an interview with The Guardian, the younger Chicago rapper revealed that there was almost one already. The Acid Rapper revealed that Surf, his recent album with Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment, was set to feature narration from Yeezus himself, if that lineup of guests wasn’t quite strange enough already.

“In the final weeks of getting ready to put it out we had vocal chops that we were using from ’Ye talking about some of the themes of the project,” he explained. “Through just thinking about it, it didn’t end up happening that way. Not to say it wouldn’t have been dope as shit!”

He also said he once wanted “Kanye to be [his] dad,” which is probably a less achievable goal, but still not an unworthy aspiration. For now though, sit tight and bide your time waiting on those future collaborations by listening to Surf and imagining what it might’ve been like with Kanye’s gravitas.
