The week after Modest Mouse announced that their long-awaited Strangers to Ourselves album would hit shelves on March 3, the band has dropped the LP’s lead single, the shambolic “Lampshades on Fire.” The song is three minutes of muffled organ playing and singsong Nightmare Before Christmas rapping. “I can’t look surprised right now / Pack up again / Head to the next place / Where we’ll make the same mistakes,” frontman Isaac Brock laments on the churning tune’s first verse.
Strangers will be the band’s first full-length album since 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Stream “Lampshades” on The Current right now.
