A Creepy Cartoon Weasel Prowls SBTRKT’s ‘New Dorp, New York’ Video

SBTRKT New Dorp New York Ezra Koenig Music Video

As the electronic musician SBTRKT, Aaron Jerome has always leaned towards the use of masks in his live performances and appearances. In his just-released “New Dorp, New York” video, which features Vampire Weekend singer Ezra Koenig’s far-out vocals, viewers don’t get the chance to glimpse of either artist. Instead, the London producer chose to goes Gorillaz route by animating the entire thing and plopping a weasel-like creature at the middle of the action.

Though there’s not much of a story there, the “New Dorp” video traces the path of the scrappy critter (is it a badger? a gargoyle?) as it slinks through the shadowy outskirts of a dingy city while hunting for prey. At one point, the beast’s eyes glow bright white as it prowls through billowing grey smoke. Eventually, it ends up resting on a giant outstretched hand, evoking the cover art for SBTRKT’s upcoming album, Wonder Where We Land (which is where “Dorp” will land).

In case you were wondering, the video was animated by PostPanic, an Amsterdamn mixed-media company that did mostly TV ads for brands including MTV and Nike before jumping in headfirst on this awesomely weird project. SBTRKT’s eagerly awaited second album drops on October 7 via Young Turks Recordings.
