These Teens Have No Idea What Nirvana’s Talking About in ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’

nirvana, smells like teen spirit, lyrics, teens react

A few months ago, we found undeniable proof that today’s teenagers know about Nirvana, thanks to a viral clip that asked a group of kids to react to the iconic video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” That was reassuring and made us feel a little less old. Here’s something a little less reassuring: another video that asks a few teens to read, react to, and make sense of the lyrics to “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Admittedly, “Teen Spirit” features some of Kurt Cobain’s most oblique turns-of-phrase, and the meaning behind his words is certainly open to interpretation, but we’re pretty sure when he said, “Load up on guns / And bring your friends,” he wasn’t referring to a group of bros playing Call of Duty. Thankfully, a good deal of the participants recognize the “Here we are now, entertain us” hook.
