Aretha Keeps Adele’s Legacy ‘Rolling’ on ‘Letterman’ Last Night

Over her half-century in the music business, Aretha Franklin has certainly learned how to build a whole lot of buzz in a short span of time. Not even a day after the studio version of her rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” made waves across the internet as the first blast from her upcoming Sings the Great Diva Classics LP, she doubled down on her momentum with a performance of the cover on the Late Show with David Letterman. The Queen of Soul looked and sounded stunning as she led a near-20-piece backing band in “Deep,” with a seamlesss dip into “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” for good measure.

Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics will be out October 21st on RCA, and as much as we’ve been conditioned to roll our eyes at the prospect of yet another legendary singer flipping through the Great American Songbook, we’re actually getting pretty pumped for this. (Especially since the next LP from Adele herself could still be years away, for all we know.) Watch and listen above.
