After becoming an instant celebrity by accepting Miley Cyrus’ MTV VMA for Video of the Year, homeless runaway and aspiring model Jesse Helt surrendered to Oregon police yesterday for a probation violation following a 2010 arrest. According to The Oregonian, the 22-year-old was booked into the Polk County Jail on Thursday and was later released on $2,500 bail.
Helt had previously been charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass, and burglary after he broke into the house of a man who he suspected of selling bad marijuana. After pleading down to misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief and criminal trespass, Helt spent 30 days in jail and was sentenced to probation. In 2011, a warrant was put out for the overnight celebrity’s arrest after he repeatedly failed to show up for meetings with his probation officer, breaking the terms of the deal. He will appear in court on September 16.
When news of Helt’s past came to light earlier this week, Cyrus took to Twitter to say, “The media never fails to disappoint. You’ve chosen to go after Jesse instead of covering the issue of youth homelessness.” She followed that by writing, “People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included.” Cyrus will reportedly help Helt sort out his legal issues, a gesture that has impressed his mom. “God gets the glory and she gets the credit,” Linda Helt told the Associated Press after the news of her son’s surrender.
The “Wrecking Ball” singer still plans to use her celebrity to help My Friend’s Place, the homeless youth charity through which she met Helt. She’s currently offering a trip and VIP concert experience for her September 28 show in Rio de Janeiro via Prizeo, with each entry costing just $5. Helt’s mugshot is below.
