Katy Perry Tops List of 2014’s Most-Streamed Songs

Katy Perry Pharrell Williams Nielsen Mid Year Report

Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems has revealed the mid-year standings for 2014’s most-streamed tracks in the U.S., and Katy Perry has come out on top. According to a Billboard.biz report, the “Dark Horse” track and its controversial video have racked up more than 188 million plays across streaming platforms like YouTube and Spotify since January, which is 44 million more than its closest competitor, John Legend’s “All Of Me.”

The top 10 tracks received 1.24 billion plays altogether, which is seven percent less than last year’s 10 most-streamed songs — although, as Billboard points out, Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” alone received 438 million plays in the States thanks to the viral craze it inspired. Other high-ranking tunes include Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” and Lil Jon’s raucous collaboration with DJ Snake, “Turn Down For What.”

Although Pharrell’s “Happy” clocked in at No. 4 on the streaming charts, it nabbed the highest ranking for digital downloads. Likewise, the success of “Let It Go” on YouTube and Spotify indicates its success elsewhere in Nielsen’s mid-year report; the Frozen soundtrack is 2014’s best-selling album so far. Nevertheless, album sales have declined 15 percent since this time last year, according to USA Today.
