At last night’s Jack White show in Milwaukee, the Third Man Records boss dove into a surprise cover of Lorde’s “Royals,” clearly lamenting “I cut my teeth on wedding rings” in Instagram-video proof of the occurance. This continues a pattern of homage in 2014 for the former White Stripes boss, who has also brought his signature bluesy screech-croon to makeovers of “99 Problems” and “Black Skinhead” (nodding to would-be collaborators Jay-Z and Kanye West), as well as Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”
Perhaps White’s launching a subliminal campaign to prove that most music today is derivative of his sound? Watch the shakey fan-footage below via Consequence of Sound, and revisit Nirvana man Krist Novoselic’s version of the New Zealand pop star’s hit song about being a peasant.
