Azealia Banks Splits From Interscope

azealia banks label split record deal interscope

After a long and confusing run of delayed release dates, collaborations-gone-wrong, and alleged Twitter lockouts, Azealia Banks says she’s free of her recording contract with Interscope. She announced the news on Twitter Thursday (July 10), though the label has yet to confirm. SPIN has reached out to Interscope publicists, as well as Banks’ management and has yet to receive a response.

Meanwhile, the oft-embattled MC is feeling pretty good:

In a series of tweets, Banks wrote, “IM ABOUT TO GET OUT OF MY DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS THE BIG SURPRISE!!!!! … I’S IS FREE!!!!!! … I’m feeling like miss celie at the end of color purple. … Free at last. … FUCK IT UP KUNTZ YAAAAAAAAAAAAS … Me right now. #misscelie https://instagram.com/p/qR9Nq3n1Z1/.” She also shared a lot of celebratory messages from her fans.

The world has been awaiting the arrival of Ms. Banks’ official debut album, Broke With Expensive Tastes, for more than two years. The set was originally scheduled for release in September of 2012, and then pushed, and pushed again (and again). In the interim, she released the track list (which included 2011’s “212”), threatened to leak the entire thing, worked with Pharrell on “ATM Jam” then turned on Pharrell, worked with Disclosure on a different track then turned on them, and was accused of repping for the Illuminati.
