Austra Get Hot and Bothered in ‘Habitat’ Video

Austra watch video habitats

With Austra’s Habitats EP out this week, the Toronto trio now shares a video for the title track that continues their decidedly NSFW aesthetic. Steamy vignettes follow the carnal desires of archetypal young lovers, as well as more atypical protagonists, in the unsettling anonymity of an eerie motel. In fact, the band confirms on Twitter that the Matt Lambert-directed clip was shot in the very same Scarborough venue where the cult-beloved Hedwig and the Angry Inch was made.

Leading woman Katie Stelmanis writes on Austra’s website, that while “‘Habitat’ is a pretty typical Austra song in that it’s made up of synths, drums, and some big woman vocals… the [EP’s] other three tunes are more different than anything we’ve released before because we decided to remove a key component of our sound: my voice.” She called the choice “a good chance for you to ingest our sound without the epic distraction that tends to overshadow some of our more subtle ideas.”
