See Spoon Debut a Raucous New Song at Primavera Sound

Spoon New Song Video Primavera

Spoon have really been playing the details of their next album close to the vest. We know that the Austin band is going to do something next week, thanks to a photo they posted that says only, “SPOON R.I.P. JUNE 10.” In early March, they uploaded a 27-second studio video showing a squalling segment from an unknown song. Last year, frontman Britt Daniel told SPIN’s Marc Hogan that their new material had a little more soul than usual. Plus, there are the recent reports that they left longtime label Merge for Loma Vista, which is distributed by Universal.

All that doesn’t add up to much, but thanks to a fan at Primavera Sound, we can now see footage of Spoon performing a brand new track almost in its entirety. “I came home last night, I heard no good news,” Daniel sings at the beginning over a tense groove that turns into an upbeat chorus. From there, though, the group ventures into noisy territory replete with heavily distorted guitars and one member just bashing on the keys. All in all, it’s pretty promising, so hopefully they get moving and get us the follow-up to 2010’s Transference ASAP.
