Hear Julia Holter’s Earthy Cover of Dionne Warwick’s ‘Don’t Make Me Over’

On her mystical and SPIN Essential 2013 LP Loud City Song, Julia Holter issued a melancholy version of Barbara Lewis’ 1963 hit “Hello Stranger,” and today she pushes her nascent fascination with 1960s singers even further with a new cover of Dionne Warwick’s “Don’t Make Me Over.”

Penned by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and initially recorded by Warwick in 1962, “Don’t Make Me Over” provides the occasion for Holter to strip back. The Los Angeles-based songwriter spins her multi-tracked vocals around earthy basslines and a slowly swinging drum beat. It’s decidedly less abstract than much of what she’s done to date, recalling Nico’s solo orchestrations or the recent work of Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Holter initially released a live version of the track on her 2010 album Celebration, but this new iteration will come out on Domino on July 28 internationally and August 19 in the United States as part of a double-A side single with her aforementioned cover of “Hello Stranger.”

Domino will also reissue Holter’s 2011 album Tragedy on vinyl on August 19. Listen to “Don’t Make Me Over” below.
