Jack White Talks Vinyl, Detonates ‘Lazaretto,’ ‘Just One Drink’ on ‘Fallon’

Jack White, 'Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,' "Lazaretto"

Familiarity has been said to breed contempt, but it can also build rapport, and that was on full display last night between Jack White and Jimmy Fallon. Just last month, the former White Stripes leader and current Third Man Records boss was on Fallon’s Tonight Show to press instant vinyl with Neil Young. The two have known each other since the White Stripes played Saturday Night Live while Fallon was a cast member.

Those recent and, sheesh, dozen-year-old ties showed during White’s latest Tonight interview segment. Fallon gushed about White’s mother, who was backstage, and then expressed gleeful enthusiasm as he and White walked through the bonuses that went into the “ULTRA” edition of White’s new album, Lazaretto: the three playback speeds, the inside-out side, the hologram, that tracks that play under the center labels, the track that plays a different intro depending where you drop the needle.

“It also makes pizza and drives you to work in the morning,” quipped White. That one-liner, and the guffawing response from bandleader Questlove of the Roots, proved the Nashville-based guitar-slinger and singer-songwriter was right not to call it a night a moment earlier, when Fallon, you’d think untoppably, said, “Thank god for Jack White.” Familiarity breeds fanboydom?

Watch the interview segment below (it’s in two separate video clips). Above, watch a blistering performance of Lazeretto‘s title track, and scroll down to see “Just One Drink.”
