Watch Big Freedia ‘Explode’ a Laundromat in Giddy, Cathartic Video

Big Freedia, "Explode," video, 'Just Be Free,'

Don’t be fooled by the serious opening to the new video for Big Freedia’s “Explode,” from the New Orleans bounce royal’s upcoming Just Be Free (due out June 17 via her own Queen Diva Music — can pre-order it on iTunes). Not that you shouldn’t take the song seriously — you should — but what it and the visuals are really most in earnest about is that, as Freedia commands, you “release your wiggle.” The busy electronic backing is all set to induce a Friday night frenzy, and the video mostly fits that objective, with a shades-wearing Freedia leading her crowd through wild dance moves, whether in a laundromat or in an alley.

As for that intro, it’s worth quoting, too: “My music, it makes me feel good about what i do, and the culture that i represent,” Freedia narrates. “People get confused by if I am he or she. I am more than just Big Freedia. I am more than just Queen Diva. I am more than just Freddie Ross. I am me. I am the ambassador, representin’ for New Orleans and for bounce music. So many things in my head sometimes, it just all makes me want to explode.” Go boom above, and while you’re waiting for Just Be Free — produced by regular collaborator BlaqNMilD and Oakland, California’s Thomas McElroy (En Vogue, Raphael Saadiq, Madonna) — twerk to Angor Republic’s “Explode” remix.
