Hear Heliotropes’ Haunting Cover of Nine Inch Nails’ ‘March of the Pigs’

heliotropes, nine inch nails

Nine Inch Nails’ monumental second album, 1994’s The Downward Spiral, turned 20 this year, and the kind folks at Brooklyn’s Goodnight Records have put together a belated birthday present in honor of the landmark LP. The label has tapped two bands on its roster — Heliotropes and Friend Roulette — to record a split seven-inch single featuring covers of two Downward Spiral cuts. Heliotropes slow down “March of the Pigs” on the A-side, trading the original’s teeth-gnashing menace for ghostly stoner-rock, while Friend Roulette sanitize the slither of “Piggy” with playful psych-pop.

The vinyl won’t be available for purchase until May 20, but both tracks are streaming below. Explore this new Downward Spiral, then revisit SPIN’s 2013 cover story on Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor.
