The months-long party that is the recording process for Foo Fighters’ eighth studio LP continued this past week in New Orleans, reports the Times-Picayune. After sessions out at Joshua Tree and tiny shows in Nashville and D.C., Foo Fighters decamped to New Orleans with producer Butch Vig for more sessions at Preservation Hall.
After a week of recording at a temporary analog studio set up at in an office at the Hall, Dave Grohl and co. celebrated last night with a surprise show big enough to shut down an entire block of New Orleans’ St. Peter Street. The famed Preservation Hall Jazz band opened the night, and enlisted Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Regine Chassagne for a rendition of “Iko Iko,” as if those two haven’t done enough covers of their own lately.
Foo Fighters were on next and reportedly launched into a 90-minute set, during which Grohl talked up the bands experiences in the city while recording and filming his forthcoming HBO series. “We’ve been to a lot of great places, we’ve jammed with a lot of great people,” Grohl said of his time in New Orleans. “But this week in this city has changed our band forever.”
The band’s new album still doesn’t have a title or a release date, but it seems pretty safe to expect more performances like these to follow as Foo Fighters trek to the remaining cities they intend to record in.
