Tacocat Hit Back at Creeps With Handmade ‘Hey Girl’ Video
Seattle band's 'NVM' ("Nevermind," get it?) is out now via Hardly Art
Tacocat’s textspeak-titled NVM, cheekily pronounced “Nevermind” and out earlier this year on Hardly Art, is a refreshing delight that hasn’t yet caught as many ears as it should. The Seattle quartet draws as much from indie-pop forebears like Cub (whose drummer was once Neko Case) as riot-grrrl heroes like Bikini Kill. So “Hey Girl” can take on leering cat-callers while still being playful — “Tell a girl that she should smile,” vocalist Emily Nokes sneers, but the fizzy pop-punk backing really does get across the anti-creep message with something like a grin. Directed by Eric J. Olson and James Smith, the handmade, animated video (via Stereogum) is endearing enough to make you want to get into a fight with the next man on the street who shouts at your friends and loved ones.
