Watch Julian Casablancas Sneak Up on Arcade Fire Onstage

Julian Casablancas has joined Arcade Fire onstage. On April 1 at Lollapalooza Argentina (via Consequence of Sound), the Strokes leader wore a Reflektor-style giant mask as the Montreal indie-rock luminaries performed their new album’s “Normal Person.”

Arcade Fire’s Win Butler even gamely acted surprised, exclaiming, “What the fuck is this?” Once unmasked, Casablancas and Butler exchanged warm grins. Watch it above around the 1:29 mark.

For Arcade Fire, the moment of mutual appreciation follows victory last month at Canada’s 2014 Juno Awards. The band has also recently been caught on video covering Boyz II Men, Stevie Wonder, and Prince.

Casablancas and his backing band the Voidz, meanwhile, have been playing new material and sharing an eight-minute video trailer. He recently told Chile’s La Tercera he’s eyeing a September release for a new LP with the Voidz, and he suggested he’d still be recording songs and performing live with the Strokes — they only have one announced date right now, New York’s Governors Ball Music Festival. Look out for people in masks.
