Watch Courtney Barnett’s Breathtaking ‘Avant Gardener’ on ‘Fallon’

Courtney Barnett, "Avant Gardener," 'The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon'

Mortality looms throughout Courtney Barnett’s garage-rock yarn “Avant Gardener” — the refrain is about difficulty “breathing in” — so maybe that’s why the song makes everything else feel like no big deal. The Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist carried over that winning nonchalance to her U.S. TV debut last night on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. Her new release The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas just got its U.S. release this month.

Read our interview with Barnett, and watch the video for “Anonymous Club.” And find out more from this writer about what makes “Avant Gardener” work so well here and here. Barnett’s Fallon gig followed a different kind of lyricism on the show the previous night from Future and Pusha T. While we’re at it: If you like Barnett, another Aussie singer-storyteller you might want to check out is Darren Hanlon.
