Miguel and Wale Cover Elton John’s ‘Bennie and the Jets’

A “Super Deluxe” version of Elton John’s landmark 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road drops next week, which features a bonus disc of contemporary artists doing his tunes. Today, Miguel and Wale’s cover of John’s pop classic “Bennie and the Jets” surfaced and their version is nothing like you’d expect. It’s a bass-heavy assault, with John’s signature piano line slightly distorted, eventually finding a groove once Miguel’s silky vocals take over. But it’s Wale’s verse that feels so out of place. At around the two-and-a-half minute mark, the D.C. rapper takes over and rhymes about signing autographs, music’s lost soul, and “females selling sex” in an attempt to make it more modern, we suppose. Thankfully, Miguel brings it home.

As previously reported, Miguel is working on the follow-up to his 2012 breakout Kaleidoscope Dream. Along with contributing to this Elton reissue, a new track of his, “Simplethings,” recently popped up in an episode of Girls and he also made an appearance in Big Sean’s video for “Ashley.”
