Mac DeMarco Chills With ‘Brother’ on Fresh ‘Salad Days’ Single

Mac DeMarco will serve up his Salad Days LP on April 1 via Captured Tracks. The follow-up to 2012’s 2 spans 11 tracks, several of which have already been spotted online: Live versions of “Treat Hear Better,” “Salad Days,” and “Let Her Go” have surfaced in the last few weeks, and lead single “Passing Out Pieces” dropped back in January. Now, the Canadian singer-songwriter has released the record’s official second single, “Brother.”

Here, DeMarco drops the prank-pop antics heard on the bogus song “Eddie’s Dream” (best remembered for its plea for a “little bit of pussy”), and doles out the sort of world-weary wisdom found on other Salad Days bits. “You’re better off dead / When your mind’s been set from nine until five,” he sings, later adding, “Take it slowly brother.” Judging from the tune’s dreamy textures and laid-back pacing, DeMarco’s taking his own advice.

Stream “Brother” below, and keep an ear out for more singles from Mac — he’s starting his own 7-inch subscription series with help from Captured Tracks.
