Even by the Grammys’ inherently fame-friendly standards, the 2014 awards felt teeming with musical legends. Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Merle Haggard, and Carole King were all among the performers, and that’s leaving out a lot of the greatness in the room. At one point, it fell to Steven Tyler (croakingly, as if was doing the National Anthem) and Pharrell (smoothly, as ever) to be sure everybody realized one of the presenters on stage was the Smokey Robinson. Not counting the Aerosmith frontman’s brief take on Robinson’s classic “You Really Got a Hold on Me,” here’s our list of the night’s best and worst, from the killer combo of Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl, and Lindsey Buckingham to Hunter Hayes being overshadowed by his own backdrop.
