See Sharon Jones Triumph Over Cancer in ‘Stranger to My Happiness’ Video

Sharon Jones Dap-Kings 'Stranger to My Happiness' Video

Soul-funk boss Sharon Jones makes a triumphant return to the limelight in the video for “Stranger to My Happiness.” The new song hails from her forthcoming album with the Dap-Kings, Give the People What They Want, which is now due out January 14 on Daptone Records. The 10-song set was originally due out last August, but Jones took some time off to focus on her health after receiving the news that she’d developed a curable form of cancer. Filmed in November by directors Rob Hatch-Miller and Puloma Basu, the clip above finds the band-leader bald following chemotherapy — an intentional choice. “Not wearing a wig and just being bald was an easy decision for me,” Jones said via statement. “I’ve always been me, and that’s not going to change now.” Fittingly, the song is about reclaiming one’s verve, and the clip is pure celebration.
