Morrissey mentioned recently that he was about to record his next solo album, and now it’s official: The long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s Years of Refusal will be out later this year. The 54-year-old revealed in a January 15 announcement that he will begin work on his tenth LP later this month in France.

Moz will be joined in the studio by producer Joe Chiccarelli (previous credits include Beck, the White Stripes, and the Strokes), as well as his longtime touring and recording band, featuring guitarists Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias, bassist Solomon Walker, drummer Matthew Walker, and keyboardist Gustavo Manzur.

The upcoming LP will be Morrissey’s first with new label Harvest Records. That’s right — the former Smiths frontman has finally inked a fresh record deal, Amanda Palmer’s career advice be damned. After years of being label-less, Morrissey is now under contract with Harvest, a former progressive-rock imprint recently revived as a Capitol Records subsidiary; other artists on the label include Banks, Death Grips, Beady Eye, Young & Sick, the Preatures, and Syd Arthur. Back in April of 2011, the singer told fan site True to You that the successor to Years of Refusal was “ready and fluttering wildly against the bars. There is still no record label and the years shuffle like cards.”

No other solid details on the forthcoming album are known yet, except that it’s due for release in the second half of 2014 and will supposedly feature a track called “Istanbul.”

Morrissey also intends to mount a tour in 2014, with official dates pending. Let’s just hope he doesn’t run into any obstacles this time around.
