Chris Brown, Lady Gaga Nominated for Worst Acting at 2014 Razzies

If the music world is enjoying better representation than usual among the 2014 Academy Awards nominations, then that must mean it’s time for some pop stars to get razzed by the Razzies. And sure enough, the 34th annual Raspberry Awards —which, um, “honor” the year’s worst cinema — have a couple of familiar names on their list of nominees. Chris Brown is up for Worst Supporting Actor for his work in Battle of the Year, while Lady Gaga is up for Worst Supporting Actress for her performance in Machete Kills.

Brown, a perennial SPIN Hall of Shame inductee, had a rough 2013 that went beyond his time as a thespian — and went beyond music, really. Most recently, Brown turned down a plea deal in a Washington, D.C., assault case that already cost him his probation. As for Gaga, her ARTPOP debuted at No. 1 and she’s about to go on what’s sure to be a huge-grossing tour, though album sales have fallen compared with previous efforts.

It’s hard to say whether Brown and Gaga are in good company or bad, exactly. Rihanna won last year’s Worst Supporting Actress award for her role in Battleship, and you know, she’s Rihanna. But 2013 nominees for Worst Supporting Actor included such musical geniuses as Vanilla Ice and David Hasselhoff. In the end, Breezy and Mother Monster probably shouldn’t worry too much: Adam Sandler usually tends to win the big awards at these things, anyway.
