MS MR, Haerts Celebrate Neon Gold’s Fifth Anniversary at Converted Strip Club

Westway, a former strip club near the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan, made a suitably glam-trash setting for the fifth-anniversay party of Neon Gold Records on Thursday night. The show featured sets from Magic Man, Haerts, and MS MR — the latter of which is not technically a Neon Gold act, but is fronted by Lizzy Plapinger, who co-founded the label with childhood friend Derek Davies when the pair were in college. After an initial flurry of limited-edition 7-inches by artists such as Passion Pit, Marina and the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, and others, the label signed a deal with Columbia just over three years ago and has since been focusing on developing its own acts. This year, 2013, was a banner year for the label (which released an album by St. Lucia and EPs from Haerts, Magic Man, and Wet) and MS MR (which capped a year of hard touring and the release of its debut LP, Secondhand Rapture), and in the spirit of things, toasts were made, shots were downed, and a pileup of friends, fans, and fam joined MS MR onstage for “Hurricane.”
