A venerable New York City venue will go out with a round of “Applause.” Lady Gaga will host a four-night residency at Manhattan’s Roseland Ballroom in spring 2014, her booking company said today. The shows will be the last at the historic hall in Midtown’s theater district before it closes its doors for good.
The announcement fleshes out a recent report Roseland would be shutting down next April. The ARTPOP pop artist’s shows are scheduled for March 28, 30, and 31, as well as April 2. Tickets, which run from $50 to $200, went on sale this morning via Ticketmaster. March 28 will also be Mother Monster’s 28th birthday, so the festivities won’t only be a fond farewell.
Founded in Philadelphia, the Roseland first opened its doors in New York in 1919 at Broadway and 51st Street, moving to its current location on West 52nd in 1956. Jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald played there from the ’20s to ’40s, though the venue eschewed rock and disco into the ’70s, emphasizing ballroom dancing. Under new ownership starting in the ’80s, the 3,500-capacity space has hosted disco, rock, pop, and more.
Revisit Vampire Weekend’s April show at the Roseland in a concert movie directed by Steve Buscemi. Recent dates at the venue have included Violent Femmes, Pretty Lights, Chris Brown, and Lamb of God, plus Lorde and Haim for the VH1 You Oughta Know concert special. Between now and Gaga, the calendar holds Panic at the Disc, Flogging Molly, Big Gigantic, and more.
