Taylor Swift won big at the 2013 American Music Awards, collecting a total of four trophies: Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Artist — Pop/Rock, Favorite Female Artist — Country, and Favorite Album — Country, which she earned for last year’s Red. This marked the third year that Swift walked away with the AMAs top honor — she was previously dubbed Artist of the Year in 2009 and 2011.
The night’s other big winner was Justin Timberlake, who nabbed three statuettes. JT left Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre as the holder of the following titles: Favorite Male Artist — Pop/Rock, Favorite Male Artist — Soul/R&B, and Favorite Album — Soul/R&B, in recognition of his first album from this year, The 20/20 Experience.
Meanwhile, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who were the ceremony’s most-nominated act with a total of six nods, picked up two awards, Favorite Artist — Rap/Hip-Hop and Favorite Album — Rap/Hip-Hop, for The Heist. This is where we remind you that the AMAs are voted on by the public, and thus, little more than a popularity contest.
Most upsetting though, is the fact that Florida Georgia Line won Single of the Year for their Nelly-featuring hit “Cruise,” beating out Robin Thicke’s summer-defining “Blurred Lines.”
As for other notable happenings, Rihanna was crowned Favorite Female Artist — Soul/R&B and also received the Icon Award, which was (adorably) presented by her mother; Avicii trumped Daft Punk in the Favorite Artist — Electronic Dance Music (EDM) category; and Ariana Grande won New Artist of the Year.
Live performers included Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga and R. Kelly, Luke Bryan, TLC with Lil Mama, and Pitbull, who also acted as host. We’ll post performance footage on Monday morning (November 25), after official embeds are available. For now, scroll down for the full list of winners, whose names appear in bold.
