See Elliott Smith Covered by Sky Ferreira and DIIV’s Zachary Cole Smith

Sky Ferreira, Elliott Smith, DIIV, Cat Power, Brooklyn tribute show, cover, "A Distorted Reality Is Now a Necessity to Be Free"

Two days after the 10th anniversary of Elliott Smith’s death, some decent video is circulating from a recent Smith tribute show in Brooklyn. The bill included Cat Power, DIIV’s Zachary Cole Smith with Sky Ferreira, Here We Go Magic’s Luke Temple, Why?, and more. Now we have fan video of Smith and Ferreira covering 2003’s “A Distorted Reality Is Now a Necessity to Be Free,” the B-side from the final single Smith released while he was alive. Ferreira appears to be reading from a lyric sheet, and it’s a whispery performance, but when her voice rises the song’s anguished beauty still carries. There’s also a partial clip of Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Ferreira messily dueting on the single’s A-side, “Pretty (Ugly Before),” which you can watch below.
