Ryan Hemsworth’s “Against a Wall” is a sleepy love song that avoids the saccharine thanks to a streak of lovely melancholy. The black-and-white video for the track hits about the same note, featuring just a girl and her cat spending time alone in a big, empty loft in some big, intimidating metropolis. The aesthetic — Steadicam, no color, bright but creaky loft — is almost oddly ’90s, but befitting a Hemsworth video, the clip is cut through with distinctly millennial trappings: an oversized Hello Kitty iPhone case, vintage blocky Gameboys, and the ironic revival of Big League Chew.
“Against a Wall” is taken from Hemsworth’s debut album Guilt Trips, which drops October 22 and puts a bow on a banner year for the man that has included a solo EP, a number of DJ mixes, festival appearances, and remixes.
