Kwes’ Conducts ‘Cablecar’ Journey Through Atmospheric R&B
London "free-pop" composer releasing debut album 'ilp' this month
Kwes sure knows how to treat his fans. “Cablecar” is the latest share from the London singer/producer’s debut album, ilp, but it feels like getting several songs in one. At over eight minutes, with so many twists and turns, it’s not hard to see why the Dels beatmaker refers to his style as “free-pop.”
All of it is on display here: sections of atmospheric R&B, borderline-ambient minimalism, percussion-backed falsetto crooning, and a few other surprises added for good measure. Way more complex than “36,” it’s the sort of captivating layering that’s perfect for deep-dive headphone analysis as well as soundtracking a relaxing candlelit bath.
Kwes’ ilp is due out October 15 via Warp.
