Tegan and Sara Say ‘Goodbye’ to People, Get ‘Closer’ to Dogs in Video Double-Header

tegan and sara, goodbye, goodbye, heartthrob

Tegan and Sara aimed directly for the pop charts with their Essential Heartthrob LP, but the SPIN cover stars are a bit more sheepish in their newest music video. The official “Goodbye, Goodbye” clip catches Tegan, Sara, and a cast of faceless co-stars mid-breakup with their respective partners. But, this being 2013 and all, none of the severances are happening in person. Instead, the semi-lyric video documents the drafting of various “Dear John” messages, all sent via text, email, or Facebook. Some heartbreakers actually grab a pen and paper (how vintage!), others opt for word magnets — anything so long as face-to-face interactions are avoided.

“‘Goodbye, Goodbye’ is a sound-off about rejection and the empowerment of shutting someone out after a breakup, but it’s also an acknowledgement of the distorted nature of intimacy that comes from communicating complex emotions through a cell phone or email,” Sara Quin told the Huffington Post. “In a way we learn more about ourselves than each other when we interact this way. Our phones and computers are just mirrors for us to reflect again and again.”

While we’re on the subject of cutting off human contact, Tegan and Sara have also shared a new version of their “Closer” video, one that replaces all of the people with dogs. Head above to watch the “Goodbye, Goodbye” video, and scroll down to see a pug play spin the bottle with a corgi. Yes, it’s as adorable as it sounds.
