Solange Rocks a Houston Mall in ‘Lovers in the Parking Lot’ Video

Solange, "Lovers in the Parking Lot," 'True,' video

Solange’s last video took her halfway around the world. A new one lands closer to the deftly decade-crossing R&B magpie’s origins. After the South Africa-shot clip for “Losing You,” the gorgeous standout from last year’s True EP, the just-released “Lovers in the Parking Lot” video heads to the mall near Solange’s native Houston — a shopping center where UGK rap titan Bun B once worked, according to a press release. The song, another collaboration with Dev “Blood Orange” Hynes, is more retro-skewed pop heartache, with Reading Rainbow guitar flickers giving way to a brooding bass line, painterly keyboard flurries, and a lovely, harmony-layered breakdown.

The clip, directed by the singer with Peter J. Brant, keeps the throwback feel but lightens up the proceedings. Solange’s fashion-conscious outfits come across like futuristic Kids Incorporated costumes — all hot pinks and DayGlos — and she dances playfully around the various commercial spaces. If sister Beyoncé recently honored Houston (and worked with Bun B) by going full-on H-Town rap for “Bow Down / I Been On,” here the younger Knowles keeps it trill by staying true to her own unfussy, arty-party charisma.
