Sleigh Bells Sweeten Phoenix’s ‘Chloroform’ on Drastic Remix

phoenix, sleigh bells, chloroform

SPIN cover stars Phoenix have offered up a few of their Bankrupt! tracks for a series of remixes: R. Kelly and A-Trak each tried their hands at “Trying to Be Cool,” while Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and Dinosaur Jr. all took apart “Entertainment” separately. Now it’s Sleigh Bells‘ turn to refurbish the Frenchies’ “Chloroform.”

Alexis Krauss and Derek E. Miller rebuild the slow-burning sweet-talker from the ground up, tossing in cricketing electronics and a spiraling synth-progression, then loading up on a slightly muffled variation of their trademark firepower percussion. Krauss adorns the track with new vocals — pivoting from schoolyard coos to full-throated marriage proposals — and cuts together a duet with Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars. All in all, it’s a sugary update directly in line with the Reign of Terror duo’s cleaner new sound.

Stream Sleigh Bells’ version of “Chloroform” below, and watch out for the Brooklynites’ highly anticipated third album, Bitter Rivals, due October 8 via Mom + Pop.
