Queens of the Stone Age Obsess Over Celine Dion in Interview by Tweens

A few months back, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme spoke with SPIN for an enlightening, career-spannng interview. The 40-year-old husband and father of two discussed his two-decade-plus run as a hard-rock heavyweight, the gestation of Queens’ latest album (this year’s outstanding …Like Clockwork), and addressed a life-threatening health issue that kept him bedridden for three months. Now, we have video footage of another in-depth Q&A with the QOTSA leader: An exclusive interview conducted by two 12-year-old girls.

Homme and QOTSA soldier Dean Fertita recently sat down for a segment of Kids Interview Bands, which is exactly what it sounds like — two seventh-graders named Olivia and Connie interviewing bands. So far, the girls have gotten time with SPIN cover stars Tegan & Sara, Baroness, Melvins, and many more. On September 15, Olivia and Connie cornered Homme and Fertita at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio and asked them the tough questions, such as “Who is your favorite Muppet?” (For the record, Homme pledges allegiance to crusty cranks Statler and Waldorf, naturally, while Fertita reps for Fozzie Bear.)

The eight-minute chat goes smoothly enough. Homme tries his best to keep the kids entertained with a running gag at Celine Dion’s expense, and he and Fertita use their indoor voices while talking about American Idol and The Exorcist, but the tweens seem kind of petrified throughout the whole clip — which is understandable, since they’re talking to two dudes whose idea of a cartoon is a blood-soaked short film cut together by Boneface. So, no, it’s not as uplifting as seeing, say, Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich tell teenage girls to feel comfortable with their bodies, but it’s bizarre enough to warrant attention. Watch the entire exchange above and, afterwards, read SPIN’s age-appropriate interview with Josh Homme.
