Queens of the Stone Age have been throwing shade at some high-value targets recently. The …Like Clockwork band’s announcement late last month of a December 14 tour date at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center included an apparent jab at Miley Cyrus, noting the the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 venue “will be designated as a (relatively) twerk-free zone” for QOTSA’s concert.” In an interview earlier this week on CBC Radio 2‘s Strombo Show, as Pitchfork points out, frontman Josh Homme aired some criticism about Jay Z and the rapper’s recent Made in America festival.
QOTSA performed at the Philadelphia-based fest (indeed, they were one of the 15 Best Things We Saw at Made in America Festival 2013), and Homme sounds none too pleased with the experience. “That guy’s a kook, you know,” he said of Jay Z. “He has his security frisking the bands on the way in.” Homme added that he warned security his band wouldn’t perform if they searched his bag. He said that had never been done at other festivals.
Homme’s criticisms extended to the Magna Carta Holy Grail MC himself. “Forget Jay Z. He also gave us some champagne and then wanted us to take a picture with it,” Homme said. “I was like, ‘That’s not a gift — that’s a marketing tool.’ I destroyed it, ’cause I thought it was rude overall, you know? And you shouldn’t frisk my guys. You should fuck off.”
Homme kept riffing on the Jay Z comments later in the interview. After an undisclosed banging sound, Homme said: “This is me breaking Jay Z’s gifts. People never say anything bad about Jay Z, do they?”
QOTSA were recently confirmed to play at Neil Young’s 2013 Bridge School Benefit, which goes down on Octboer 20 and October 21 with fun., the Killers, My Morning Jacket, Jenny Lewis, Elvis Costello, Heart, Diana Krall, and Young himself with a reunited Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Jay Z has announced his own Magna Carter World Tour, and his Drake collaboration “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2” just surfaced online. And somewhere in America, Miley Cyrus is still — okay, sorry.
