Laura Marling Sleeps With the Enemy in ‘Devil’s Resting Place’ Video

Laura Marling 'Devil's Resting Place' Video Eagle

Laura Marling’s incredible Once I Was an Eagle is full of lyrics about love gone wrong, but “Devil’s Resting Place” is in a class of its own. The darkly sylvan story-song takes the trope of sleeping with the enemy to a bleakly literal location, casting the singer as forever changed after she’s spent time in the embrace of evil. “When you come to call on me that’s why my eyes are glazed,” she deadpans, “I’ve been with the devil in the devil’s resting place.”

Once again teaming up with directors Fred Scott and Nick Davies (of both “Master Hunter” and the “When Brave Bird Saved” medley short), Marling now gives the song an entrancing video treatment. Therein, we see a woman in Victorian garb traversing a shadowy forest in order to rendezvous with a mysterious black-suited man. As they grow nearer, a dancer in white appear possessed, caught up in the throes of ecstasy or exorcism — it’s impossible to tell which.
