Kanye West Won’t Be Upstaged, Even, Almost, by Charlie Wilson

Kanye West, 'Late Night Jimmy Fallon,' "Bound 2," Charlie Wilson, the Roots, 'Yeezus' video

Charlie Wilson stole the show from the young’uns during this summer’s BET Awards 2013, and he almost would’ve done the same last night if not for Kanye West’s sheer dominating force of will.

The 60-year-old R&B veteran sings the defenses-obliterating bridge on “Bound 2,” a Yeezus highlight that barbs its gooey soul with scabrously coarse prurience (see our Complete Guide to Understanding the 67 Names in Kanye West’s Yeezus Credits). Wilson joined West on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, in an appearance that wasn’t announced until Fallon spoiled the surprise via Twitter earlier in the day. The Roots and a children’s choir also helped out, while West was unsmiling and intense in a long kilt and too-hot-for-summer jacket.

West, whose “Hold My Liquor” was just covered by New Zealand phenom Lorde, is taking Kendrick Lamar on tour. He’s also set to perform on the BBC’s Later… With Jools Holland next week. If Wilson joins him on the jet, British TV audiences better watch out.
