Eminem’s recent retro streak continues with the throwback artwork for his upcoming eighth album. The Detroit MC recently unveiled the cover art for The Marshall Mathers LP 2, tweeting out an image that hearkens back — surprise! — to the cover of Em’s undisputed masterpiece, 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP. As seen above, the sepia-toned photo revisits the rapper’s childhood home, which has been boarded up and put on the auction block (via Detroit News).

Located at 19946 Dresden Street, the single-family home was listed on the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority website on September 17. According to public records obtained by the Detroit Free Press, Eminem’s mother, Deborah Nelson, bought the house in 1987 for $19,900. The property was eventually passed around to 10 or so different parties before being foreclosed upon in 2001.

An executive with the Michigan Land Bank told the Free Press that the building is one of 4,000 properties the organization acquired last year after the addresses failed to sell at a minimum auction of $500. Currently, a listing on Trulia estimates the value of the 767-square foot location at $37,000. A previous owner reportedly tried to sell the house on eBay for $500,000, but received no bids. Now the minimum bid on the vacant space is $1.

Em spoke with SPIN about his memories of the home in 2010. “It may sound corny, but I’ll go by and try to remember how things were when I was in those houses,” he said. “I’ll go back and remember, like, fuck, man, how life was back then. How much of a struggle it was. As time goes by, you might get content and forget things.”

So far, nostalgia has hung heavily over Eminem’s Recovery follow-up. The first single from MMLP2, “Berzerk,” is a snot-nosed homage to the Beastie Boys and Billy Squier that aims to “take it back to straight hip-hop and start it from scratch.” Em tapped vintage hip-hop guru Rick Rubin to executive produce the effort, and he’s also returned to the bleach-blond hairdo of his glory days.

The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is set to arrive on November 5. It’s one of SPIN’s 50 Fall Albums That You Gotta Hear, so be thankful that it’s pretty much guaranteed to hit its fourth-quarter deadline. Scroll down to scope the record’s full cover art.
