Black Orange Juice’s latest is dubbed “Started in Paris,” but the new group’s story began in London many years ago. Acclaimed producer Ossie (Hyperdub, 20/20 Vision, FACT, Red Bull) enlisted two of his childhood friends for his latest project — singers Paul Black and Tillz, whose comely R&B vocals perfectly round out the Chicago house core and disco kiss of the beatwork.
True Panther Sounds will release 3 Started Alone, a four-track EP from Black Orange Juice, on September 23. Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard will contribute a remix of “I Don’t Know,” but the aforementioned “Paris” is, indeed, a great place to start. Building from a chopped swell of strings and a bouncybass rhythm, the song is instantly celebratory with the lyrics to match: “It started in Paris, on a boat / Felt so much love, when we got close.”
