Manchester quartet the 1975 have been eliciting some dramatic responses from music fans on both sides of the pond and at at either end of the love-hate spectrum, but dramatic music will do that. Earlier this month we heard singer-guitarist Matthew Healy bend his heart-skewering coo to an acoustic rendition of his band’s breakthrough song, “Chocolate.”
Now we’ve got a new share from the September 3 eponymous album to consider — “M.O.N.E.Y.,” in which the often polished-sounding act goes full-tilt Peter Gabriel electronic-soul wildout. Lyrically, the 1975 stick to their rakish topical fodder, telling a poetically compelling story of one man’s night out on the town — a hot mess of a dude who ingests various intoxicants and breaks a bunch of shit (including his own skin) on a mission to oblivion.
