Jane’s Addiction Lyrically Ejaculate on Limp ‘Another Soulmate’

Jane’s Addiction are about to hit the road, and they’ve shared a new song to bring with them. Still, with all due respect to the Perry Farrell-led band and its considerable legacy, they might want to leave this one at home. Speaking to Rolling Stone about one-off single “Another Soulmate,” Farrell said he “thought it’d be interesting to try and write a Beatles-esque short song that would be fast and furious and it would just be fun, dig it and move on, short attention span.” The Beatles — people moved on from them pretty fast, right?

The resulting riff-rocker is indeed quick, and Farrell’s vocals soar in a way that makes sense alongside fellow alternative-rock veterans Soundgarden’s 2012 King Animal. But the “short attention span” part of Farrell’s description might be more applicable than the bit about anything Fab. Reportedly inspired by his wife’s friend, who would date a puzzling assortment of guys and say of each that he’s her “soul mate,” the heavily polished track twice has a sing-songy verse melody that distantly recalls Placebo’s weed-obsessed 1998 “Pure Morning.” The kicker, though: Farrell twice roars, “My soulmate makes me shoot my shot.” We’re all mature here, but anyone else wonder what Farrell’s wife — or her friend — thinks?

Farrell also described a video idea for the song. “I want to make something that would go viral,” he told RS. “I said, ‘Think about the dating services, how wacky they are.” Right? The present day, so wacky.

Jane’s Addiction didn’t play last weekend at Lollapalooza, the festival Farrell founded. But another Farrell band, Bad Things, stepped up to replace Death Grips after the noise-rap provocateurs’ dramatic no-show (Bad Things were one of SPIN’s 50 Best Things We Saw at Lollapalooza 2013). In May, Jane’s Addiction performed at Northern California’s Bottle Rock Festival 2013. The band’s last album, 2011’s “superslick” The Great Escape Artist, featured TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek.

Farrell told RS “Another Soulmate” will feature prominently in Jane’s Addiction upcoming dates alongside Alice in Chains as part of the multi-city Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival., which kicks off Friday, August 9, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, whose own Walking Papers is also on the tour, will play in both Jane’s Addiction and Alice in Chains during the festival tour.

Also on the bill: Coheed and Cambria. “I like them a lot,” Farrell told RS, though it’s unclear whether he’s found another soulmate.
