D.I.Weird: Fiona Apple Cuts Her Hair in Bizarre Homemade Video

Fiona Apple, Blake Mills, "I Know," "Anything We Want," video, tour

Fiona Apple and Blake Mills’ upcoming collaborative tour is called “Anything We Want,” and they’re already previewing a little bit of what that might mean. Apple recently shared a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed video for “Hot Knife,” off of last year’s SPIN Essential album The Idler Wheel…, but rather than add visuals to another track from the album to promote the upcoming shows, Apple and Mills have gone back to 1999’s When the Pawn… and its gut-wrenching “I Know.” And rather than highlight the track in a more conventional way, Apple and Mills perform it in a new video (via Pitchfork) set in someone’s living room. A smiling Apple holds the hand of a so-far unidentified woman, while Mills strums an acoustic guitar, standing in for the album version’s piano, percussion, and strings. It’s charming and intimate, but voyeuristically so, as we peek in on a moment where we’re clearly outsiders.

Apple and Mills’ tour website also now features a video of Apple cutting her hair in the mirror while wearing a face-cleansing mask. It has a similarly strange effect.

Mills opened for Apple and played guitar in her band during her recent The Idler Wheel tour, and their upcoming 13-date run through North America will be as a duo. “We know it’ll be something special, and we aren’t being coy here — it’s just that we have about 26 percent of an idea of what the fuck we will be playing for you,” they said in a statement. “But here is something true: The uncertainty excites us.”
